Introduction to Neuro-Nudge
Most people want to begin with a purpose or goal in mind before taking action. This search for purpose often leads to procrastination, as they postpone taking tangible steps until they feel they have found their true calling.
Neuro-Nudge takes a different approach. Take action first, and find your purpose along the way. Purpose is not some hidden treasure out there waiting for you to find it. It is the fundamental direction your life is meant to go, and it will become clearer over time as you put in the work.
Let’s look at an example:
John had always dreamed of writing a book but felt overwhelmed by the enormity of the task. Instead of waiting for a moment of inspiration or a clear sense of purpose, John committed to a daily writing practice, writing only 200 words, equivalent to a few paragraphs, every morning.
At first, it was difficult, and his inner critic often tempted him to skip days. But John persevered, focusing on this small daily goal. Over several months, these small efforts accumulated, and by regularly pushing himself outside of his comfort zone, he developed strong willpower and discipline.
Eventually, John not only completed his book but also discovered a deeper passion for writing. His purpose became clearer through the process because he started with small, consistent actions that not only moved him closer to his goal, but also served as a daily exercise which turned him into a more disciplined, resilient person.
The Neuroscience of Willpower (it’s like a muscle!)
Neuroscience research supports the idea that willpower functions like a muscle. When you repeatedly practice self-control and engage in challenging activities, you can strengthen your willpower over time.
This is because the prefrontal cortex, the area of the brain that plays a large role in decision-making and self-control, becomes more efficient and effective with regular use. There are other regions of the brain that are strengthened through the regular use of willpower as well such as the anterior mid-cingulate cortex. Without diving into the details, the only piece you need to remember is that willpower is just like a muscle - use it or lose it.
